Brockmoor Primary School: Physical Education (PE) Curriculum

A Curriculum That Develops Physically Literate, Confident, and Competitive Athletes

At Brockmoor Primary School, we believe that Physical Education is a powerful tool for whole-school improvement, promoting physical competence, confidence, well-being, and lifelong participation in physical activity.

We are currently designing our own bespoke PE curriculum, which builds upon our school values while continuing to integrate the holistic, child-centred approach of Real PE. This ensures that every pupil benefits from an inclusive, engaging, and skill-progressive PE experience.

Our curriculum is structured around Real PE’s six key ‘cogs’, which develop both physical and personal skills:

1️⃣ Personal – Developing resilience, self-motivation, and a positive attitude towards challenges.
2️⃣ Social – Encouraging teamwork, communication, and collaboration.
3️⃣ Cognitive – Teaching children to think strategically, make decisions, and evaluate performance.
4️⃣ Creative – Encouraging imagination, innovation, and problem-solving through movement.
5️⃣ Physical – Developing fundamental movement skills, coordination, and fitness.
6️⃣ Health & Fitness – Ensuring children understand the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

By embedding these cogs into every PE lesson, we ensure that pupils develop not only physical competence but also emotional intelligence, problem-solving skills, and a lifelong love of movement.

Additionally, we use Moki bands to track pupil activity levels, giving children real-time data on their movement and encouraging healthy competition, goal-setting, and self-improvement.

We are proud to have two permanent PE coaches as part of our staff, who drive physical education and activity across the entire school day. Their expertise supports not only curriculum PE but also breaktime and lunchtime structured activities, targeted interventions, and whole-school fitness initiatives.

As part of our commitment to PE excellence, we are currently working towards achieving the PE Quality Mark, ensuring that our curriculum is high-quality, inclusive, and impactful.

A Structured, Knowledge-Based PE Curriculum Using CUSP Principles

Our PE curriculum follows the CUSP lesson structure, ensuring that each session is knowledge-rich, vocabulary-driven, and carefully sequenced for skill progression.

Each lesson follows six distinct phases:

1️⃣ ConnectRetrieval of prior knowledge and physical skills to build upon existing learning.
2️⃣ ExplainExplicit vocabulary instruction and introduction of new knowledge related to movement, tactics, or fitness.
3️⃣ ExampleTeacher modelling and expert demonstrations, ensuring pupils understand correct techniques and execution.
4️⃣ AttemptGuided partner practice and oral rehearsal, focusing on movement precision, coordination, and verbal articulation of learning.
5️⃣ ApplyIndependent skill execution in structured, game-based scenarios, promoting autonomy and decision-making.
6️⃣ ChallengeApplying skills in a competitive setting, refining techniques under pressure, and adapting strategies in real-game situations.

By following this CUSP framework, we ensure that pupils develop deep, transferable knowledge of physical skills and concepts, strengthening their ability to execute movements effectively and understand the rationale behind each activity.

Physical Development in EYFS: Early Foundations

In EYFS, Physical Development is a core area of learning, ensuring children develop:

🏃 Gross motor skills – Running, jumping, climbing, balancing, and coordination.
✍️ Fine motor skills – Developing dexterity, grip strength, and control for handwriting.
⚖️ Spatial awareness and movement control – Understanding body positioning and movement patterns.
🎯 Agility, balance, and coordination – Fundamental skills for later sporting success.

Through structured play and guided activities, children:

🏗 Climb, balance, and move confidently using equipment.
🏃 Engage in games that develop agility, coordination, and teamwork.
🎶 Use dance and creative movement to explore expression and rhythm.
Begin learning simple ball control, throwing, and catching skills.

These early movement experiences provide the foundation for structured PE lessons in Key Stage 1 and beyond.

A Whole-School Commitment to Physical Activity

At Brockmoor, PE is not just limited to timetabled lessons – it is embedded into daily school life as a tool for whole-school improvement.

🏅 Competitions for All
We provide both intra- and inter-school competitions, ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to experience competitive sport, regardless of ability.

🌟 PE Coaches Driving Whole-School Physical Activity
Our two dedicated PE coaches work across the school day to:

✅ Deliver high-quality PE lessons across all year groups.
Run structured physical activities at breaktimes and lunchtimes, including football, basketball, skipping, and running.
✅ Provide targeted PE interventions, supporting SEND pupils and those with motor skill development needs.
Lead Wake Up Shake Up sessions before school to energise pupils and promote physical well-being.
✅ Offer after-school sports clubs, providing extended opportunities for structured sporting participation.

🏋 PE as an Inclusion Strategy
PE is also used as a targeted SEND intervention, supporting:

🔹 Core strength and coordination development.
🔹 Fine and gross motor skill improvements.
🔹 Confidence and social-emotional well-being through team activities.

By embedding physical activity into every aspect of school life, we ensure that pupils develop a lifelong love for movement and fitness.

How Moki Bands Are Used to Track Activity

📊 Real-time data tracking – Pupils can see their activity levels and set personal targets.
🏆 Healthy competition – Moki bands are used for class vs. class challenges and personal best tracking.
🎯 Motivation for active learning – Teachers use Moki data to encourage movement-based learning, linking physical activity to maths, reading, and problem-solving tasks.
📖 Whole-school movement analysis – Moki data informs our PE strategy, ensuring we are meeting physical activity targets for all pupils.

Using Moki bands has been a transformational tool for encouraging higher levels of daily activity, improved concentration, and greater pupil engagement in movement-based learning.

Assessment: Tracking Progress in PE

📊 Ongoing formative assessment – Observing skill progression, participation, and engagement.
🏆 PE awards linked to school values – Recognising resilience, teamwork, and excellence.
📝 End-of-unit skill evaluations – Tracking improvement in movement fluency and application.
Competition performance reviews – Assessing tactical awareness, decision-making, and sportsmanship.

Assessment in Brockmoor’s bespoke PE curriculum is not just about physical ability but about effort, attitude, and progress, ensuring that every child can succeed and improve.
